Nearsightedness (or Myopia) is a condition where either the cornea (the front covering of the eye) is too curved, or the eye is too long. This results in objects that are at a distance coming into focus in front of the retina causing them to appear blurry. The retina is the light-sensitive layer in the back of the eye. In this age of improved medicine and the dawning of refractive surgical technology, glasses and contacts need not be your only hope to correct this visual problem. Nearsightedness & Your Vision One-third of the people in the United States are facing life with less than perfect vision. Glasses and contact lenses are practical options for most people, but for many others, these are uncomfortable, obstructive, and time consuming. It is for these reasons that refractive surgery exists. LASIK may be the opportunity for you to see clearly with less dependency on glasses or contacts. This facts page will help explain this procedure and will help you decide if this is the vision correcting answer you have been looking for. What is LASIK? Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a procedure that uses a computer controlled excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct your vision. The laser reshaping is performed under a protective flap of tissue to promote a very rapid recovery of vision and minimize discomfort. At first, a femtosecond laser (Ziemer LDV) is used to create a flap in the cornea of the eye. The flap is lifted and the excimer laser is used to reshape the eye according to your prescription.
